MODERN
DANCING
Most
of the modern dancing created by choreographers from Surakarta and
Yogyakarta consists of functional dances describing the daily lives
of the Indonesian people, such as the peasant, the weaver, the maker
o f the batik, etc. Also, a number of patriotic dances have been
choreographed, describing the struggle of the Indonesian people
in defending their independence.
Most of the choreographers create dance compositions with movements
from several different styles of Indonesian dances. Some are compositions
from other styles. Among the gamelan melodies most popular with
the choreographers are the dynamic Javanese melodies and the gay
Sundanese gamelan melodies, especially the playing of the drums.
