The
background of Sendratari Jakatarub Yogyakarta style, is the Javanese
legend approaching the setting up of the kingdom of Mataram (16th
century), The story is as follows:

YOGYAPRANA DANCE
The
Yogyaprana Dance was created in 'the fifties by Wisnu Wardhana,
dancer and choreographer of the younger generation. The Yogyaprana
Dance is a modern dance, movements of which derived are from Java
and India. The dance describes all the xperiences of throughout
his life, both pleasant and unpleasant. Though many of the elements
of the movements are taken from Indian dancing, the basic movements
are Javanese, Yogyakarta style. The melodies are olso javanese,
THE
PEASANT DANCE
The
Peasant Dance was created by a young choreographer from Yogyakarta,
Bagong Kussudiarja in the sixties. It describes the movements of
Javanese woman peasants, from the planting of the rice, to the guarding
of the ripening rice from the nuisance of birds, the harvesting
to the final pounding of the rice. The Peasant Dance can be danced
by one woman or by a group of women. A distinctive characteristic
of the Peasant Dance choreographed by Bagong, is that the dance
movements are a combination of classical Javanese and Sundanese
dance movements. There are also new movements which are fairly realistic.
The dance is accompanied by a Javanese gamelan playing Sundanese
melodies.
THE
BATIK DANCE
The
Batik Dance is a composition of Bagong Kussudiarja in the sixties.
It describes the movements of Javanese women making batik, starting
from the smoothening of cambric to the making of batik with the
traditional primitive batik instrument. The Batik Dance can be danced
by one woman or by a group. The composition is a combination of
elements of dance movements, Yogyakarta style and Surakarta style,
and new realistic movements. The accompanying instruments are the
Javanese gamelan playing Sundanese melodies.
THE
WEAVER DANCE
The
Weaver Dance was choreographed by Sodarsono (author of this book)
in the sixties and is solo or collective dance for women. The Weaver
Dance describes a village girl weaving with a very primitive weaving
instrument. The dance starts with the planting
of the cotton seeds, the picking 6 ' f the bursting cotton fruits,
the drying in the sun, the spinning of the cotton into thread and
finally the weaving into cloth. The dance composition is a combination
of elements of Javanese dance movements Yogyakarta style and Surakarta.
